Job Summary
Install, troubleshoot, test, splice, repair, and maintain telecommunications products including Key Systems, PBX, Centrex, fiber optic, and copper cable for new and existing customers. Perform outside plant work by locating defective cable, operating construction equipment, and marking underground facilities to prevent damage. Respond to dispatches, provide troubleshooting support, and manage installation projects while proactively educating and selling TDS services such as telephony, video, and high-speed internet. Maintain orderly logs of locate requests and perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities. This role requires a Monday-Friday schedule with potential overtime and on-call rotation. Candidates must reside within 60 minutes of the Tonto Basin, AZ warehouse and hold a valid driver's license.
Required Qualifications
- 1+ year basic technical telecommunications experience
- current/prior military service with honorable discharge
- 6+ months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation and repair, or switch training
- valid driver's license
- ability to maintain DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements in relation to operating vehicles with a combined GVRW (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of >10,000 lbs
- ability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions
- reside within a 60-minute driving distance from the Tonto Basin, AZ warehouse
- willingness to work overtime as needed
- willingness to participate in an on-call rotation
- ability to work and make decisions independently with little or no supervision

- ability to successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum
- ability to be available for on-call/standby responsibilities
- ability to occasionally travel
- ability to locate and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent facilities from being damaged
- ability to keep an orderly log of all locate requests in our exchange area
- ability to perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities
- ability to identify location of defective cable using various test equipment
- ability to repair buried, aerial, underground and/or customer cable
- ability to install, splice, repair, and maintain aerial, buried, and/or underground fiber optic and copper cable
- ability to install, troubleshoot, test, splices, repairs, and maintain telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities and/or other TDS products & services for new and existing customers
- ability to install, configure, maintain, and repair Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems, and other business systems such as fiber terminals, ISPs, ISDN, DSL, T-1s, and/or DS3s (carriers, paging, and wireless)
- ability to provide troubleshooting support techniques and corrections
- ability to respond to trouble dispatches
- ability to provide high level support for enhancing and maintaining record systems (cross connects, line groups, network elements, etc.)
- ability to understand how to use and demonstrate TDS products
- ability to seek sales opportunities while educating the customer
- ability to understand commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of telecommunications
- ability to understand telecommunication products and services: Inside Wiring/Cable, Internet/Intranet, Bonding & Grounding, Data & Computers/Transmission Concepts, Fiber Optic Transmission, Static Sensitive Equipment, Color Codes, Structured Wiring, Video/CATV/DBS Installation, Inventory Systems, Cable Locating, Battery Maintenance, Key Systems/PBX, Centrex, Switch Maintenance, Voicemail, Special Circuits, Fiber Terminals, Subscriber CXR Terminals, T-1s, ISPs, DSL, ISDN Voice & Data, Testing ...
- ability to have practical knowledge/experience with computer applications including (but not limited to): Databases, Trouble/Repair/Dispatch Systems, Plant Record Systems, MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Explorer, and CD-ROMs
- ability to have strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting
