Job Summary
Conduct reef fish surveys on NOAA Ships and Small Research Vessels, coordinating field crews for fisheries and water quality sampling while troubleshooting limited resources at sea. Manage pre- and post-survey equipment inventories, prepare loading gear, and serve as the liaison between ship, lab, and participants. Execute video annotation, review, and data entry per SOPs, identifying marine fishes across Gulf of America and Caribbean habitats. Perform QA/QC on video data from GFISHER and PRDW surveys, update GitHub project management tools, and assist analysts with dataset preparation and manuscript reviews. Report weekly progress, complete incident reporting, and engage in public outreach, school programs, and scientific presentations.
Required Qualifications
- MS degree in Marine Science or a related field, or BS degree plus 3 years of relevant experience
- Computer literate with common word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs; capable of college-level reports and oral presentations
- Knowledge of SEAMAP field sampling protocols for reef fish to lead or participate in GCRF surveys
- Experience as lead data collector on at-sea surveys; skilled with shipboard software handling hydrological (SCS) and biological (SEAL) data streams
- Proficient in fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification; knowledge of Gulf of America reef taxa
- Knowledge of procedures for encountering endangered or threatened species
- Must submit a NOAA Health Services Questionnaire (Form 57-10-01) and Tuberculosis Screening Form (NF 57-10-02) annually/biennially
- Must have a current tetanus vaccine (within 10 years)
