Job Summary
Repair and clean GATX-owned railcars by assisting mechanics with truck disassembly, replacing couplers and gears, and maintaining tank car valves and coils. Perform initial sampling, remove excess commodity, and hydro-blast railcars to prepare them for paint applications. Complete daily work orders while adhering to AAR, FRA, and GATX safety and quality guidelines. Maintain a clean work area and recommend safety improvements. Requires high school senior status, broad mechanical aptitude, and ability to lift 85 pounds and work in extreme temperatures. Salary is $17.00/hr with no incentive.
Required Qualifications
- Broad Mechanical aptitude
- Basic computer skills, with the ability to learn new systems
- Ability to read
- Willingness to adhere to GATX policies, Safety and Quality procedures, engineering instructions, and FRA rules and regulations
- Ability to work effectively as a team player
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, in English
- Ability to problem-solve and use sound judgment
- Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions
- Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods
- Must be able to lift (vertically) up to 85 pounds from the ground surface
- Must be able to push / pull (horizontally) up to 140 pounds
- Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights
- Must be able to work in extreme temperature environments
