Job Summary
Field Crew Laborer duties include measuring and cutting rail for resale, loading railroad ties, performing fire risk assessments and fire watch duties, navigating via GPS, inspecting and maintaining vehicles/equipment, participating in job briefings, driving DOT-regulated vehicles, maintaining logs, safety compliance, and adapting to varied tasks while supporting railroad operations and field crews. Requires safety training, English fluency, basic mechanical and mathematical skills, and the ability to pass background checks.
Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in English
- Demonstrated intermediate mechanical and basic mathematical skills
- Valid driver’s license (no major offenses in last 3 years)
- Class A or Class B CDL preferred (air brake endorsement; no manual transmission restrictions)
- Pass a railroad background check to work on railroad property (no disqualifying convictions within last 7 years)
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOT medical card
- Ability to lift/carry up to 100 lbs
- Ability to work outdoors and on uneven surfaces
- Able to travel up to 24 consecutive days per month
- Safety training and certifications compliance
- Record-keeping: electronic driver’s log compliance
