Job Summary
Operate fiber fusion splicers, OTDRs, and light-level testers to splice, troubleshoot, and repair buried and aerial fiber optic cables per TDS standards. Install enclosures, identify cable faults, and perform acceptance testing on newly constructed facilities while reading construction plans and coordinating daily tasks with OSP teams and contractors. Document work, update as-built records, and support project closeout by submitting redlines and completion paperwork. Maintain equipment, assist Field Services as needed, and ensure DOT inspections are performed where required.
Required Qualifications
- 1+ year of telecommunications inside or outside plant experience working with fiber optic installation, splicing, and testing
- 1+ year of telecommunications inside or outside plant experience working with copper or coax installation, splicing, and testing
- current military service or prior military service with honorable discharge
- Must follow the TDS attendance guidelines
- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license
- Must remain eligible for DOT requirements
- Understanding of telecommunication products and services with relation to fiber optic technology
- ability to climb poles, ladders, towers, and other structures
- ability to kneel, dig, lift, and pull
- Must successfully pass all components of the Safety Training course curriculum
- Must successfully complete customer-specific requirements, which may include a background check administered by the customer
- Proven organizational skills and ability to multi-task
- Must be willing to work overtime as needed
- Must be required to work various/swing shifts as business needs dictate
- Must be able to operate vehicles with manual transmissions
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
- Must be regularly exposed to outside weather conditions
- Must be able to work in attics and crawl spaces
- Must be able to work in high-risk areas such as high voltage electrical, trenches, and manholes
- Must be frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment
- Must be frequently exposed to high, precarious places
- Must be frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles
- Must be frequently exposed to vibration
- Must be occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions
- Must be occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
- Must be occasionally exposed to extreme cold
- Must be occasionally exposed to extreme heat
- Must be able to tolerate loud noise levels
