Job Summary
Fermentation Scientist in Durham, NC to support bioprocess work for pipeline projects from lab to pilot scale. Responsibilities include designing and conducting fermentation experiments in glass and stainless-steel bioreactors (100 mL to 30 L), collaborating across research teams, analyzing fermentation kinetics to drive process improvements, scaling up and validating microbial processes, exploring new technologies (automation and AI tools) to enhance efficiency, documenting protocols and reports, and supporting external interactions with universities, CROs, and CMOs. Requires hands-on microbial fermentation and downstream processing experience, DoE and data analysis proficiency, and ability to work in a multi-site, international environment. Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific field
- 2–3 years of experience in an industrial R&D environment (Biotechnology, Ag-Tech, or Pharma) with ability to work within corporate structures and project management frameworks
- Proven hands-on experience in microbial fermentation (bacteria, fungi, or yeast) and downstream processing (e.g., centrifugation, filtration, freeze-drying)
- Experience operating lab-scale and/or pilot-scale bioreactors and associated analytical tools
- Familiarity with Design of Experiments (DoE) and statistical data analysis
- Strong collaborative mindset, detail-oriented documentation skills, and ability to work in a multi-site, international environment
