Job Summary
Fermentation Engineer (II or Senior) to lead laboratory and pilot-scale fermentation development at Manus. Responsibilities include designing and executing fermentation runs from lab to pilot scale (1–4000 L), preparing media and inoculum, maintaining aseptic techniques, troubleshooting deviations, and optimizing strategies (batch, fed-batch, continuous) to improve yield, titer, and productivity. The role bridges R&D and manufacturing, requires data analysis (Excel, JMP, Python) and documentation of results, and involves cross-functional collaboration with molecular biology, downstream processing, and analytics teams, as well as supporting technology transfer and compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory guidelines (GMP where applicable). The position is located in Augusta, GA, and expects hands-on operation in lab and pilot facilities, with opportunities to scale processes toward commercial production.
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Fermentation Sciences, Engineering or related field OR MS with 8+ years or BS with 13+ years relevant experience
- Expertise in bench and pilot-scale fermentation process development
- Expertise in microbial physiology
- Experience with analytical instrumentation (GC, LC) (preferred)
- Experience in scale-up of fermentation processes from lab-scale to pilot plant and/or production-scale (preferred)
- Ability to develop fermentation strategies (batch, fed-batch, continuous)
- Ability to troubleshoot process deviations (e.g., contamination, pH drift, DO issues)
- Strong data analysis skills (Excel, JMP, Python) and ability to interpret results
- Excellent documentation and communication skills
- Cross-functional collaboration with molecular biology, downstream processing, and analytics teams
- Knowledge of GMP and regulatory guidelines (where applicable)
- Experience with technology transfer to manufacturing teams
- Strong problem-solving and multitasking abilities
