Job Summary
Receive and dispatch loose cargo to ensure it is properly prepared for sea transport. Stuff and strip flatracks and containers within safe shipping weight limits, while maintaining and replacing emergency and lashing gear. Operate pressure washers to clean refrigerated containers and assist truck drivers with locating loads in the yard. Maintain inventory control of all dunnage, pallets, and bulk cargo, and uphold overall housekeeping standards across the terminal, warehouse, and office areas. This highly physical role requires working outdoors in all weather conditions while performing strenuous labor and managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must understand terminal yard layouts, follow established safety procedures, and operate forklifts up to 45,000 pounds.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Driver's License
- Ability to pass an annual DOT physical examination
- Certification and proficiency in operating forklifts up to 45,000 pounds
- Ability and willingness to qualify on forklifts, yard hustlers, and other support equipment utilized in daily operations
- Knowledge of terminal and yard operations
- Ability to safely and efficiently move oversized or awkward loads
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to interpret and work with complex alphanumeric codes
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Ability to communicate effectively using radios and telephones
- Ability to issue instructions and follow up on assignments when necessary
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and during peak operating periods
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods
- Frequent stooping, kneeling, bending, and climbing
- Ability to run and jump as necessary
- Ability to perform physically demanding work and withstand prolonged physical exertion during peak operating hours
- Ability to safely handle cargo, equipment, and operational materials
- Must successfully pass an annual DOT physical examination
