Job Summary
Family Court Counsellor in the Alberta Public Service provides triage, intake, safety screening, needs assessments, referrals, and limited dispute resolution to support families across the court system. Responsibilities include delivering ongoing assessments and information to clients before, during, and after court; case management; facilitating consent terms and in-court support; engaging with external stakeholders (lawyers, legal aid, shelters, police, etc.); and maintaining accurate records in the provincial database. Requires strong verbal and written communication, assessment, interview, negotiation, dispute resolution, and decision-making skills, plus knowledge of evolving family law processes and the Family Law Act. The role is full-time, permanent, based in Calgary, with standard APS hours, and requires eligibility criteria including a Bachelor of Social Work and appropriate professional registration where applicable.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Social Work Degree (or approved equivalent) with related experience in client interviews and assessments
- Registration with Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) as required by Health Professions Act if applicable per degree origin
- Equivalencies: Master of Social Work (no experience required) or related degree with specified experience, or diploma/certificate pathways as outlined
