Job Summary
Meet individually with assigned mentees for at least 5-10 minutes weekly to address barriers to school attendance and establish goals for returning to class. Provide academic support during classroom push-ins, connect families to internal and external resources, and communicate daily with parents while staying abreast of mentee assignments with teachers. Review weekly attendance reports with the Community School Director and Social Worker, work with mentees to define goals for severe chronic absenteeism and SEL needs, and de-escalate situations to help students return to class. Collect and maintain comprehensive, up-to-date attendance records while supporting the Attendance team with referrals. This role supports chronically absent youth at University Settlement's PS34 Community School to improve academic outcomes and connectedness.
Required Qualifications
- HS diploma or HSE
- At least 2 years previous experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds
- Experience in conflict resolution, crisis counseling, and de-escalation strategies
- Strong background in program development, arts, curriculum design, and lesson plan writing
- Demonstrated cultural sensitivity
- Strong organizational, written, and verbal skills
- Self-directed and able to work as part of a team
- Creativity, flexibility, and commitment
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in arts, education, counseling or a related field preferred
- Bi-lingual Spanish a plus
