Facilities Service Technician

Job Summary

Monitor the performance and operational status of building support systems, including HVAC, electrical, and fire safety, to prevent equipment stoppages. Conduct daily rounds and inspections, recording data and responding to variances while investigating root causes for safety incidents. Manage hazardous waste storage areas, label materials, and coordinate chemical shipments in compliance with regulations. Complete assigned work orders from the Facilities Lead, maintain organized workspaces, and ensure proper tool and material disposal. Work a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours coverage and attend shift turnover meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in an understanding of building support systems such as HVAC, Electrical Systems, Pumps and Fluid Dynamics, Chemical Handling, Hazardous Waste Management and Building & Infrastructure, including knowledge of vacuum pumps, plumbing, compressors, water systems, safety systems, motors, controllers, refrigeration, and general construction
  • Ability to work with others
  • Coachable attitude with the ability to take direction and constructive criticism from senior team members
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. regularly and perform physical labor throughout the shift
  • Ability to pass pre-employment physical (lifting) test and spirometry breathing test
  • Ability to use computers and common software
  • Skills to clearly communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to interface with programs such as the Building Management System
  • Ability to obtain annual RCRA, Hazardous Waste and DOT training
  • Participation in applicable training/certification courses
  • Utilization of expertise based on hazmat certifications
  • Ability to provide direction in creation of hazmat shipping documents in an accurate and timely manner
  • Ability to investigate root cause when unexpected interruptions or safety incidents occur
  • Ability to restore equipment when unexpected interruptions or safety incidents occur
  • Ability to mitigate future failures when unexpected interruptions or safety incidents occur
  • Ability to consistently maintain a safe work area
  • Ability to clean and put away tools and instruments
  • Ability to dispose of materials correctly
  • Ability to monitor the performance and know the operational status of the highly technical equipment and plant support systems within the Facilities area of responsibility
  • Ability to inspect the performance of the building equipment daily
  • Ability to respond as necessary to any variances
  • Ability to manage coordination of tasks and complete assigned work orders in a timely manner
  • Ability to assess, create and maintain hazardous waste storage areas
  • Ability to label all raw material as well as collected hazardous waste materials
  • Ability to assist in physically moving incoming chemical shipments to designated storage areas
  • Ability to supervise storage activities
  • Ability to anticipate floor containment needs for exchanges and customer needs
  • Ability to ensure that all spaces within the area of responsibility are kept consistently organized and clean
  • Ability to report items low on stock
  • Ability to adhere to the Viavi Safety Charter; Safe Practices; Procedures and Policies
  • Ability to place the safety of co-workers and self before other priorities
  • Ability to wear certain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses and safety shoes at all times according to the Viavi Safety policy
  • Ability to handle hazardous and non-hazardous materials, including exposure to material dust
  • Ability to wear dust masks or breathing apparatus and protective clothing based on OSHA requirements for wearing full or half face respirators or N-95 type masks
  • Ability to work with a set on-site work schedule
  • Ability to work rotating on-call coverage for after hours, weekends and holidays as required to support Manufacturing that operates 24/7/365
  • Ability to strictly adhere to the Viavi attendance policy
  • Ability to participate in shift turnover meetings
  • Ability to provide status updates
  • Ability to work occasional overtime hours
  • Ability to work flexible shift hours to complete specific projects
  • Ability to respond to requests from the Facilities Lead Technician, supervision, management or through assigned work requests
