Job Summary
Fire Engineer (External Wall Assessments) for Jensen Hughes UK team. The role involves performing critical fire engineering duties for external wall construction, reviewing architectural drawings and specifications for fire life safety compliance, conducting on-site intrusive surveys and inspections of new and existing buildings, conducting risk-based assessments following PAS 9980 methodology, developing fire engineered solutions for new designs, and producing clear, comprehensive reports. Responsibilities include supporting fire safety strategy development, contributing to fee proposals and business development, keeping technical knowledge up to date, delivering in-house CPD presentations, and traveling to client sites with regular overnight stays. The role supports hybrid, part-time, and flexible working arrangements and requires collaboration across multiple UK offices (London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh). The candidate should have knowledge of facade and building envelope systems, experience with external wall surveys, and a strong understanding of relevant Building Regulations and fire safety guidance. Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of facades and building envelope systems and interfaces (Cladding, curtain wall glazing, render, brickwork)
- Knowledge of construction methods and fire performance of external wall materials
- Knowledge of passive fire protection products, fire testing and field of application
- Knowledge of waterproofing systems focusing on system classification and fire interaction
- Experience carrying out intrusive external wall surveys on high-rise and large buildings
- Ability to read architectural drawings and specifications
- Ability to author technical reports with engineering judgement
- Understanding of fire safety design legislation and guidance (Building Regulations, Approved Document B, Fire Safety Order, PAS 9980)
- Knowledge of fire risk assessment process
- Experience with refurbishment schemes and on-site contractor management
- Ability to work at heights and use scaffolding or elevated work platforms
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word for reports
- Ability to manage own workload and mentor junior staff
- Willingness to travel to client sites with overnight stays
