Job Summary
Design, fabricate, build and maintain Zoo educational interpretive exhibits and themed playgrounds. Translate abstract concepts into functioning objects including development, schematic design, construction, documentation, logistics planning, installation, and project management. Prepare preliminary budgets, schedules, and plans for review with necessary staff, architects/designers and outside contractors. Research the natural history, behaviors, and physical capabilities of animal subjects to ensure exhibits meet physical and psychological needs; refine specifications; develop fabrication options. Work with materials such as metal, wood, concrete, welding, model making, molds, urethanes, epoxies, resins, paint, and carving or sculpting. Collaborate on planning and maintaining the zoo's public art collection; communicate design ideas to non-design professionals. Must be able to read construction drawings and site plans; participate in meetings with staff, contractors, and state Construction reps; meet physical requirements of the role including lifting and outdoor work.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in art, art history, design or related field from an appropriately accredited institution with course work in three-dimensional design
- equivalent combination of education and experience
- two years of experience in museum exhibit design
