Job Summary
Assist teachers with planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating instructional activities while developing classroom procedures and preparing necessary materials. Monitor student safety, well-being, and attitudes to encourage independence, and maintain discipline through behavior observation. Provide one-on-one academic assistance, reinforce instructions, and conduct short study skills sessions. Maintain standardized records, file incident reports, grade papers, check attendance, and manage classroom supplies and audiovisual equipment. Participate in staff development workshops and perform general housekeeping and repair tasks. Escort students to therapy, the cafeteria, and buses, and operate automotive equipment as needed. Requires an associate degree, substitute bus monitor certification, and prior student supervision experience. Full-time, 10-month term with NC04 pay.
Required Qualifications
- Associates Degree (or higher)
- 48 semester hours college-level coursework
- Ability to be a substitute Bus Monitor
- Prior experience in instruction and/or supervision of students
- Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children
- Working knowledge of the core subjects at the grade level
- Some knowledge of the school organization and its community
- Some knowledge of expected behavior of children, that is, basic characteristics of ages and stages
- Skill necessary to operate classroom based technology and standard office equipment
- Skill to make learning aids which will strengthen lesson plans
- Ability to comprehend the purpose of teacher-designed strategies as a fulfillment of the instructional objective
- Ability to discern significant student behavior and refer this to the supervisor
- Ability to impart information to the child's level of comprehension
- Ability to apply impartially and consistently proper methods of recognition, reward, and correction
- Ability to solve independently most minor problems
- Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision
- Ability to record and store data accurately
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information
- Active Classroom Presence: Regularly moving throughout the classroom and school to support student activities and maintain a safe learning environment (standing, walking, bending, reaching)
- Assistants escort students to therapy, the cafeteria, and buses, and must be ready to move quickly
- Utilizing full communication abilities (speech, vision, and hearing) to interact with students, staff, and parents
- Using hands for tasks requiring both fine motor skills and simple grasping (e.g., handling educational materials, operating equipment)
- The ability to occasionally assist students with mobility or safety needs, which may involve safely lifting, transferring, or stabilizing individuals who weigh over 100 pounds
- Occasionally responding to situations that may involve potential biohazards, similar to those encountered in a lab or shop setting
- May require the occasional operation of automotive equipment (driving) to fulfill job duties
- Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools
- Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination
- Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
- Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations
- Requires the ability to talk and hear
- Must be able to communicate via telephone
