Job Summary

Assist teachers with students with disabilities by providing one-on-one academic support, managing behavioral needs, and ensuring classroom safety. Deliver daily life skills instruction, including toileting, feeding, and mobility assistance, while maintaining standardized student records and incident reports. Support instructional delivery by modifying materials, preparing activities, and reinforcing learning across Pre-Kindergarten through Exceptional Children classes. Perform general housekeeping, set up equipment, and manage classroom supplies under general supervision. Maintain certification in Crisis Intervention and CPR, and adhere to all district policies regarding confidentiality and emergency procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which proves the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Must meet paraprofessional requirements under 'No Child Left Behind.'
  • Associate degree, or
  • Completion of 48 semester hours of college credits, or
  • Successful completion of a series of WorkKeys assessments plus earn 96 contact hours of appropriate staff development
  • Due to licensing requirements, preschool assistants must have an associate's degree in Early Childhood Development
  • Must become initially certified in a Crisis Intervention Program (specific program to be determined by MCS Exceptional Children's Department) and maintain that certification through the proper renewal process (adhering to all timelines)
  • Obtains and maintains basic first aid and CPR certification
  • Must be able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, kneel, crouch, key requiring repetitive motions
  • Must be able to use visual acuity in preparing and analyzing written or computer data
  • Must be able to visually inspect small defects and/or small parts
  • Must be able to operate a variety of machines, motor vehicles, hand, and job specific equipment and tools
  • Must be able to determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work
  • Must be able to observe general surroundings and activities
  • Must be able to communicate by spoken word to express or exchange ideas and convey detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly
  • Must be able to safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Must be able to establish positive relationships with students
  • Must be able to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
  • Must be able to perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress and adapt when confronted with emergency situations
  • Must be able to work with both children and adults with disabilities
  • Must be able to talk and hear
  • Must be able to lift students of various weights independently and with shared responsibility
