Job Summary
Senior/Principal Equipment Services Engineer focused on transformer-related activities for generation, transmission, and nuclear within Southern Company footprint with leadership across the transformer portfolio. Responsibilities include providing engineering support to site transformer engineers and project managers, developing technical specifications for medium to large power transformers, reviewing vendor drawings and factory test reports, witnessing factory inspections, supporting field and factory repairs including failure analysis and corrective actions, leading condition-based maintenance and reliability initiatives, conducting root cause analysis for transformer events, coordinating quarterly switchyard meetings, owning the Generator Step-Up Sparing Strategy and Battery Energy Storage System transformer sparing strategy, participating in Fleet Review Board switchyard activities, maintaining generation transformer spare parts lists, and ensuring inventory and storage levels at Forest Park and Calera warehouses. Collaboration with Operations Monitoring & Diagnostics and Supply Chain Management, plus after-hours technical support for TERP, are expected. Requires a Bachelor's in Engineering (ABET) with 5+ years in electric utilities and strong leadership, communications, and problem-solving skills; Professional Engineer license is preferred.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required
- Professional Engineer License is preferred
- Minimum 5 years’ experience working in or in support of electric utilities is required
- Experience in transmission maintenance or protection and controls is highly preferred
- Experience in generation switchyards is highly preferred
- Knowledge of circuit breakers and/or transformers is highly preferred but not required
- Experience within the industry such as IEEE, NATF, EPRI, or Doble is preferred but not required
