Job Summary

Operate a hydraulic crane and utilize heavy motorized equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level soil and aggregate. Assist the Driller in positioning the drilling rig, add rods or augers, remove core samples, and install steel piling in pre-drilled holes. Lead or train lower-level equipment operators while performing general support tasks such as inspecting machinery, logging samples, and making mechanical repairs. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Requires a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License and four years of heavy equipment experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid class A or class B Commercial Driver's License
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Four years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, end loaders, dump trucks, drillers, etc.
  • Successful completion of an approved vocational school program (substitutes for two years of required experience)
  • Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in the area of assignment
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment
  • Knowledge of basic blueprint reading
  • Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor driven equipment
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools
  • Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment
  • Ability to operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment
  • Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance
  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities
  • Ability to climb high steel structures
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers
