Job Summary

Environmental Technician in Oklahoma City responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental codes and regulations through field inspections, enforcement actions, and responding to environmental incidents. Duties include inspecting sites to assess environmental conditions, enforcing codes and regulations, addressing citizen inquiries and complaints, responding to hazardous and non-hazardous spills, sampling ambient water and other contaminants, assisting with special projects and events, attending environmental committee/agency meetings, generating routine reports, supporting public awareness programs, maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment, and operating largely independently while coordinating with City personnel. The role requires knowledge of environmental regulations, strong communication and reporting skills, proficiency with GIS tools, and the ability to work in safety-sensitive environments; possession of a valid driver's license and preferred qualifications such as an associate degree or higher in a related field and a 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and City environmental codes, water quality regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Skill in enforcing environmental codes and standards.
  • Skill in recording information accurately.
  • Skill in communicating effectively in verbal and written form using tact and diplomacy.
  • Skill in conducting on-site inspections to determine compliance with established water quality regulations and the ability to utilize required safety equipment and apparel.
  • Skill in use of geographic information systems software.
  • Ability to assess ambient biological, chemical, and physical scientific characteristic of water bodies.
  • Ability to read and interpret applicable codes, ordinances, regulations, maps and plans.
  • Ability to follow standard administrative procedures and policies.
  • Ability to independently follow verbal or written instructions.
  • Willingness to follow established safety procedures.
  • Possession of a valid Driver License (Operator).
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of an associate degree or higher in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field, or a minimum of two years of applied inspection experience in NPDES Storm Water Programs.
  • Skill in utilizing computers with routine and specialized programs such as ArcGis, inspection management systems, and Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience conducting water quality-based assessments; performing industrial facility audits; conducting construction site inspections; supporting hazardous waste segregation activities; assisting with environmental emergency response; or enforcing environmental codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Possession of a forty (40) hour HAZWOPER Certification or other applicable regional or national environmental certifications or licenses.
