Job Summary

Environmental Specialist II coordinates Field Services and Operator Training for the Public Drinking Water Program in eastern Nebraska. Responsibilities include conducting surveys and inspections of public water systems to ensure compliance with State and Federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) regulations, providing on-site enforcement and guidance on violations, delivering technical assistance for modifications necessary for compliance, investigating potential health risks, attending public meetings to explain regulations to system owners and local officials, overseeing construction elements of wells and facilities, preparing technical reports, and contributing to operator training and education efforts. The role requires independent work, knowledge of hydrology, geology, engineering, chemistry, and biology as they apply to drinking water, and the ability to read plans and specifications, assess risks, and communicate findings effectively. Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in a related physical or environmental science field, with experience substituting for education; preferred experience operating a public water system and licensure as a water operator; ability to obtain Grade I Water Operator license within four years; and valid driver’s license. The position is based in Lincoln, NE, with a standard Monday–Friday schedule and potential for flexible 10-hour days after probation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the physical sciences, natural sciences, environmental science, geology, biology, agronomy, civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, hydrology, community and regional planning, or a related field.
  • Experience may substitute for education or a year-for-year basis.
  • Preferred: Experience operating a public water system, including work with water production, distribution, storage, and treatment facilities, with current licensure as a water operator desired.
  • Ability to obtain a Grade I Water Operator license as listed in Title 179 NAC 10-005,01(3)(a, b, c, d) within four years of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license or ability to provide independent transportation.
