Environmental Safety & Health Director - Multi-State Travel

Job Summary

Proactively plan, direct, and implement the Company's ESH program to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment for employees, clients, subcontractors, and the public. Partner with SBU Executive Vice Presidents and leadership to build a proactive safety culture while supporting field operations and ensuring compliance with all federal, state, county, and local regulations. Champion "The Layton Way" by delivering predictable outcomes, leading incident investigations through root cause analysis, and overseeing safety staff to manage hazard assessments and inspections. Implement critical safety systems including Corrective Action Plans, Pre-Mobilization, Weekly Focus Walks, and Pre-Task Plans while preparing monthly safety reports for management. Act as the corporate contact for OSHA and other safety authorities, creating and executing training programs to align with business expectations. Extensive travel to multiple locations will be required.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 15 years of direct commercial construction safety experience
  • Thorough understanding and application of construction safety regulations, risk management principles, industrial hygiene practices, workers' compensation, and general liability
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, evaluate, and mitigate safety risks while developing effective safety strategies and solutions
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills
  • Exceptional written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation communication skills, with the ability to effectively influence and gain buy-in from diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to delegate effectively and lead high-performing safety teams in a director-level capacity
  • High level of integrity consistent with Layton's 'Constructing with Integrity' values
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Extensive travel to multiple locations will be required

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental health & safety, safety management, construction or related field preferred
  • Board Certified Safety Professional designation preferred (CSP, ASP, or CHST)
  • OSHA 510 Certification obtained within the last 24 months
