Environmental Health Specialist

Job Summary
Conduct inspections of food service establishments, sewage systems, swimming pools, and lodging facilities to ensure compliance with state and county regulations. Investigate complaints involving environmental health ordinance violations, prepare reports, and make recommendations for corrective measures. Confers with government agencies, community partners, and private organizations to interpret and promote environmental health programs. Collaborates with health personnel in epidemiological investigations and control efforts. Collects laboratory samples as required and conducts food handler, ServSafe, and Aquatics Venue Operator classes. Maintains accurate work records, adheres to HIPAA guidelines, and proactively provides feedback for quality improvements. Reports for special duties during public health emergencies if applicable.
Required Qualifications
- A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university with specialization (30 semester hours) in biology, chemistry, bacteriology, sanitary science or closely related area, or a combination of the areas
- Excellent communication and computer skills
- A current driver's license and auto insurance
- Must complete Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and Certified Pool Inspector (CPI) courses of training, as well as ServSafe Course for Instructor & Proctor Certification within required timeframe(s)
- A minimum of 15 hours of continuing education annually is required upon hire
- Frequent travel is required to make site visits within the county and regional/metropolitan area
Desired Qualifications
- On-site septic system inspection and/or installation experience
