Job Summary
Conduct public health and environmental control inspections, investigations, and assessments to identify and abate factors detrimental to community health. Enforce applicable acts, regulations, and by-laws while issuing violation tickets in a firm, consistent manner. Review, draft, and update standards, programs, and controls; perform education, research, and analytical tasks to prepare relevant reports. Operate sampling equipment and interpret complex technical documents including legislative acts and laboratory reports. Work independently under limited supervision to organize priorities and communicate effectively with facilities and the public.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Health degree, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Must be certified as a Public Health Inspector in Canada (CPHI(C))
- Must possess a valid BC Driver's License
- Ability to conduct through inspections and investigations using a risk-based approach
- Ability to determine compliance or corrective action in the inspection of public facilities
- Ability to apply critical thinking and problem solving techniques
- Ability to analyze and interpret test and inspection results
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including speaking in public and preparing reports
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with others
- Ability to work independently under limited supervision in a geographic area, and to organize and prioritize work
- Ability to read and interpret complex technical documents, such as legislative acts and regulations, architectural and engineered plans, and chemical and bacteriological laboratory reports
- Ability to enforce acts and regulations and to issue violation tickets in a calm, firm, and consistent manner under stressful conditions
- Ability to operate related equipment such as sampling equipment and recorders
- Ability to use a wide variety of related computer software applications
- Ability to teach in a group environment
- General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and Strengths-based care
- Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety
- Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
- Must be able to report past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections
