Job Summary

Implements and maintains Authority-wide environmental health and safety policies, procedures, and programs across environmental management systems, environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, general industrial safety, fire/life safety, electrical safety, and construction safety. May assist in developing specific EHS programs used to conduct complex environmental safety surveys and accident investigations. Establishes system performance standards and independently assesses performance for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Conducts environmental safety audits and inspections and develops/maintains programs to reduce environmental risk. Coordinates between the Office of Environmental Health & Safety and other MARTA departments. Has authority to suspend unsafe operations to protect people and property. Supports environmental compliance, EMS, and remediation efforts; develops plans, training materials, inspection and audit programs, and related activities. Supports general industry safety, industrial hygiene, fire and life safety, hazardous materials management, confined space safety, and PPE; designs inspections and training. Supports construction safety initiatives and electrical safety programs. Leads investigations of incidents, monitor safety controls, collect data for performance metrics, and provide technical guidance. Requires ability to work variable hours and be on call for emergencies. Professional certifications in safety disciplines are preferred; Public Transportation Agency Safety Certification may be required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, or a related discipline is required.
  • Six years of directly related experience in environmental and safety codes and regulations, EHS program development and implementation, and conducting complex environmental safety surveys, assessments, and accident investigations are required.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations and industry standards applicable to environmental management.
  • Experience with Environmental Health and Safety Programs in a transit environment is desired.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • In lieu of a degree, directly related work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
