Job Summary

Seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technician to support the engineering and scientific staff at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in the development of optical instruments, focusing on mechanical assembly and design support.

Required Qualifications

  • One year of full-time experience at the GS-8 level or equivalent
  • Technical work experience in a research lab environment
  • Graduate education directly related to the position may substitute for experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in a research lab environment
  • Knowledge of standard machining operations
  • Familiarity with inspection processes such as IPC 610, 620, or NASA standards
  • Ability to operate and program multi-axis CNC milling machines
  • Familiarity with cleanroom operations

Additional Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. person (citizen, permanent resident or be a national of a country eligible to be approved on an export license)
  • Must be able to be approved on an export license
