Job Summary
Seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technician to support the engineering and scientific staff at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in the development of optical instruments, focusing on mechanical assembly and design support.
Required Qualifications
- One year of full-time experience at the GS-8 level or equivalent
- Technical work experience in a research lab environment
- Graduate education directly related to the position may substitute for experience
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in a research lab environment
- Knowledge of standard machining operations
- Familiarity with inspection processes such as IPC 610, 620, or NASA standards
- Ability to operate and program multi-axis CNC milling machines
- Familiarity with cleanroom operations
Additional Requirements
- Must be a U.S. person (citizen, permanent resident or be a national of a country eligible to be approved on an export license)
