Job Summary
The Senior Optical Engineer is responsible for the design, development, validation, and support of automotive exterior lighting systems for OEM customers in the heavy-duty market. This role includes leading optical design activities, supporting cross-functional teams, and ensuring products meet regulatory, customer, and manufacturing requirements. Candidates should possess extensive experience using optical design software, testing and validating optical systems, and designing injection molded parts. Mentorship of less-experienced engineers is also a key responsibility.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field
- 3-5+ years of optical engineering design experience in automotive exterior lighting
- Familiarity with mechanical and/or electrical engineering design principles
- Experience with manufacturing processes relevant to automotive lighting and optical components (injection molding, plastic part assembly, coatings)
- Good documentation, communication, and teamwork skills
Desired Qualifications
- Extensive experience with Lucid Shape and associated optical design modules/software
- Experience with Zemax, SPEOs, or other optical design software
- Experience designing optical systems using LEDs, molded lenses, and reflectors for automotive lighting applications
- Creo CAD experience
- Capability in interpreting regulatory requirements and industry standards (FMVSS 108, UN Regulations, SAE Lighting Systems Group)
- Advanced GD&T application
- Tolerance stack-up analysis
- Experience with vibration/static/thermal FEA, thermal CFD, mold flow analysis, part measurement and dimensional analysis
