Engineering Manager, Subscriptions
$222,000–$248,000 year
HybridSan Francisco, California, United States
Job Summary
Lead a team of server engineers building Strava's subscription and payments backend systems that power millions of athletes. Own the technical roadmap for payments and subscription infrastructure, balancing platform investment, reliability, and delivery while writing code and making architecture decisions. Hire, develop, and retain engineers at multiple levels, coaching through career growth and building processes that stick. Keep payment and subscription services reliable and healthy by managing on-call rotations and incident response. Partner cross-functionally with product, design, accounting, and marketing to identify high-leverage work and ship it. Manage people at different career stages and help each one develop, whether advancing to senior roles or taking on larger technical ownership. Make pragmatic tradeoffs between shipping now and investing in the platform, explaining those decisions clearly to partners. Stay technical by unblocking engineers and maintaining informed opinions on system design.

- 5+ years of professional software development experience in backend engineering
- 2+ years of engineering management experience, or demonstrated tech lead experience where you were already doing the job of coaching engineers, driving technical direction, and owning delivery for a team

- Experience with distributed systems and production infrastructure (MySQL, Redis, Kafka, Kubernetes, or similar)
- Experience with, or genuine interest in, payments, billing, or subscription systems
- A track record of helping engineers grow through direct feedback, mentorship, and sponsorship
Desired Qualifications
- We'd love to talk to you about the future of Strava's core technologies and your role in developing them
