Engineering Manager - Code Plane [M3]
$96,000–$192,000 year
On-site · Remote, Oregon, United States
Job Summary
Engineering Manager for the Code Plane team at Sourcegraph, leading a small team of strong individual contributors with hands-on architectural guidance and people leadership. You’ll work alongside Product, Design, Solutions Engineering, and adjacent engineering teams to translate customer feedback into a concrete roadmap, own the team's weekly execution, and ship meaningful work. The role emphasizes a strong focus on developer tools and AI agent ecosystems (MCP servers, agent SDKs, agentic dev tooling, CLIs), with responsibilities that include setting expectations, conducting 1:1s, and guiding architecture and quality decisions while still contributing code on occasion. The position requires 3+ years of management experience, a technical IC background, collaboration with cross-functional partners, and a proven track record of shipping customer-facing features for AI agents and related tooling. The company values async-first culture, proactive communication, and a clear technical voice in shaping product and architectural trade-offs. The compensation structure includes base salaries across zones, equity, and generous benefits, with the potential for flexible, globally distributed work arrangements and overlapping hours with EST. The team priorities include Batch Changes, MCP, Code Monitors, Code Insights, and the src CLI, with a roadmap toward agent-driven, self-healing rollouts and robust orchestration of AI-enabled development workflows.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years managing a team of professional software engineers
- experience running the full performance cycle: hiring, onboarding, feedback, career growth, and managing out when necessary
- strong IC background (IC4-equivalent) with ability to provide technical guidance on architecture, code quality, and trade-offs
- experience leading teams that build end-user product features—ideally developer tools, agent/AI products, CLIs, or other technical product surfaces
- experience partnering closely with Product and Design to take features from idea to shipped, and incorporating customer feedback into the roadmap
- customer-facing experience: discovery calls, design partnerships, incorporating feedback loops into a roadmap
- experience shipping products consumed by or built for AI agents (MCP servers, agent SDKs, agentic dev tooling)
- hands-on experience using and reasoning about coding agents (Amp, Claude Code, Cursor, or similar)
- async-first communication skills and experience working in a globally distributed remote team
