Engineering Manager, API/Product
$280,000–$280,000 year
On-siteSan Francisco, California, United States
Job Summary
Manage and grow teams spanning the Convex product experience, giving engineers real ownership while holding them to a high bar for craft and simplicity. Develop a strong understanding of developer and agent needs to make tradeoffs between competing priorities across APIs, agent frameworks, integrations, and the component system. Work closely with the CTO and product lead to align teams on priorities, stay hands-on technically through architecture decisions, code review, and technical direction, and design, build, and maintain developer-facing surfaces. Provide direct feedback and have hard conversations when necessary. Full-time role with a salary range of > $280,000 plus equity and benefits; hire primarily in San Francisco with remote options for experienced candidates.

- Deep experience building and shipping high-quality developer-facing products or tools, ideally at a technical or developer tools company

- Strong product sensibility and taste
- Comfort with prioritization and tradeoffs across a broad surface area, and the judgment to know what matters for customers and what matters for the business
- Experience working in fast-moving environments where requirements shift and many of the hardest problems are not fully specified upfront
- Interest in working in-person at Convex's office in SF
- Never really stopped being engineers
- Can actually evaluate the work their team is doing
- Earn respect through judgment rather than a title on an org chart
- Can get deep in the weeds with the team
- Give engineers real ownership
- Hold them to a high bar
- Help them get better over time
- Know the difference between stepping in and getting out of the way
- Have the ability to have a hard conversation
- Takes responsibility for the team's outcomes
- Make sure the team understands the why
- Dig into the root of disagreements rather than pulling rank
- Sweat the details most people would let slide
- Hold a high bar for how things feel to build with
- Pull that same standard out of the engineers around them
- Have a bias toward doing fewer things better
- Push back on unnecessary complexity
- Know when to tell the team to stop gold-plating something and just ship it
- Be constructive, positive, and excited about making things better
- Treats integrity as a way of life
- Honest with the team
- Go to bat for the team
- Do the right thing when no one is watching
- Treats trust as a way of life
