Job Summary

Engineer/Principal Engineer Survivability - Infrared Technology in California focuses on optical design for lenses and optical components within infrared/survivability systems. You will model, simulate, and reduce detectability across electromagnetic, infrared, visual, and acoustic spectrums; build and test physical models; collaborate in an IPT to balance design goals with customer requirements; and apply tools such as Zemax, FRED, Code V, and CAD packages while coding in C++, CUDA, or Python. The role requires a STEM degree (Bachelor’s with 2+ years, Master’s with 0+ years, or higher such as PhD with related experience), active Secret clearance (SAP access potential), willingness to travel (10%), and on-site work at Redondo Beach or San Diego, CA. You’ll contribute to end-to-end survivability programs and work in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team across various environments, from labs to test ranges, potentially overseas. The position emphasizes hands-on verification, modeling, and collaboration within a fast-paced environment, with opportunities for career growth and impact on stealth technologies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM discipline with 2 years of related engineering experience; OR Master’s Degree in STEM with 0 years of related engineering experience; for Principal Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree with 5 years or Master’s with 3 years or PhD with 1 year of related experience
  • Demonstrated experience in design of optical systems using applied optical theory and raytrace methods - from initial concept to manufacturable hardware design
  • Demonstrated experience using Zemax, FRED, or Code V
  • Familiarity with NX and/or other CAD software
  • Familiarity with C++, CUDA, Python, and/or other programming languages
  • Strong interpersonal communication and technical writing skills
  • Active U.S. Government in-scope Secret Security Clearance; ability to obtain and maintain SAP clearance
  • Preferred: experience in infrared signature analysis, non-rotationally symmetric optics, software development in C++, CUDA, or Python
  • Experience with proposal writing and project cost estimation
  • Experience in project and/or supply-chain management
  • U.S. Citizenship is required for positions with government clearance
