Job Summary

Engineer, Operations Coordination at AESO in Calgary focusing on power system analysis and operational planning. You will participate in developing weekly Operational Plans, conduct technical studies of planned system conditions/events (power flow, dynamic stability, voltage stability), provide operating guidance to AESO System Controllers and information to Market Participants, analyze system disturbances, and conduct special studies/projects. Responsibilities include creating operational plans based on power flow and stability studies; supporting unplanned system events; providing after-hours engineering support; collaborating with internal groups and external participants; developing and maintaining operational data, models, and analytic applications; and contributing to operating policies, reliability standards, and market rules. Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and eligibility to register with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), with 4-5+ years in electric system operations/planning; experience with PSS/E, TSAT, VSAT; knowledge of Alberta transmission and industry-wide reliability requirements; and familiarity with PSCAD, Python, Pi-ProcessBook, Access, and Excel. The role offers hybrid work and a comprehensive compensation package, with a focus on operational coordination and reliability for Alberta’s power grid.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
  • Eligibility to register with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
  • North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) certification is an asset
  • A minimum of 4-5+ years’ experience in electric system operations and/or planning
  • Experience in conducting power flow, dynamic stability and voltage stability studies using software such as PSS/E, TSAT, and VSAT
  • Knowledge of the Alberta transmission system and typical bulk electric system operating practices
  • Knowledge of the Alberta electricity industry and industry-wide reliability requirements, and the role of NERC and WECC in electric system operations
  • Experience with PSCAD, Python, Pi-ProcessBook, Access and Excel software is an asset
