Job Summary
Automation Engineer II/III leads design, development, installation, commissioning, and qualification of automation and process control systems for manufacturing at Biogen’s RTP site. Works with cross-functional teams to define process requirements, configure PLC/SCADA/HMI systems, select instrumentation, troubleshoot automation issues, and ensure systems meet cGMP/regulatory requirements. Supports validation activities, investigations and CAPAs, and drives continuous improvement to enhance system performance, reliability, and cost efficiency. May participate in on-call or off-shift support and lead automation scope for capital/operational projects, including cost estimates, schedules, and site standards for control systems and instrumentation.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university
- Experience with Rockwell and Siemens platforms (Engineer II) or Rockwell and Wonderware (AVEVA) or other DCS with regulated manufacturing environments (Engineer III)
- Experience with validation processes and documentation: Writing user requirements, system functional/design documents, and test protocols
- Understanding of risks and controls in electrically classified areas
- Willingness to participate in on-call rotation and possible shift coverage
- Experience in automation engineering in pharmaceutical/manufacturing settings; familiarity with 21 CFR Part 11 is preferred
- Strong communication, cross-functional collaboration, and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to design, develop, install, commission, and qualify automation and process control systems
- Knowledge of cGMP regulatory requirements and maintaining compliant documentation
- Experience with instrumentation integration and control system specification
- Knowledge of PLC/SCADA/HMI programming and commissioning
- Cost estimation, scheduling, and execution experience for automation projects
- Experience with data science/machine learning is a plus
