Job Summary
Perform detailed engineering reviews of ship structural plans and stability analyses to ensure compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and contract commitments. Prepare first-principal calculations and utilize finite element modeling techniques, primarily FEMAP and NASTRAN, to predict vessel structural integrity. Conduct classical stress, finite element, and fatigue analyses, then prepare technical reports to resolve problems with other engineers. Maintain technical quality and timeliness of all assigned projects under ABS Quality System requirements while supporting U.S. government agencies such as the Navy, MSC, and Coast Guard. Requires U.S. citizenship, security clearance, and a B.S. in engineering with 0–5 years of experience.
Required Qualifications
- U.S. Citizen
- Must have or be able to attain a security clearance
- B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other related disciplines
- 0 to 5 years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society
- Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software
- Experience in software related to stability such as GHS, NAPA, or other equivalent software
- Demonstrated experience in performing stability analyses in accordance with relevant Rules and Regulations
- Exposed to Finite Element Method (course work or supervised research)
- Knowledge of related technical disciplines
- The ability to identify, analyze and propose solutions to problems
- Good command of the English language
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing
- Ability to work well with others
- Familiarity with the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems (internal candidates only)
- Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems
- Access to information that is subject to control by the Export Administration Regulations and/or the International Traffic in Arms Regulations
