Job Summary
Distribution Planning Engineer role based in Edmonton, AB, Canada for EPCOR/EDTI, focusing on planning electric distribution and transmission systems. Responsibilities include developing and validating load forecasts, building and authenticating power-flow models, planning distribution-system expansions (including 10-year plans), analyzing contingencies, interconnecting distributed generation, providing stakeholder insights, supporting regulatory filings, budgeting, and contributing to grid transformation efforts. Requires a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, 5+ years of distribution-planning experience, and active APEGA Professional Engineer registration. Proficient with CYMDIST and other load-flow/short-circuit tools; experience with Python, data warehousing tools (Azure, DataBricks, Snowflake), Power BI, CAD/GIS tools (Microstation), and familiarity with SCADA/OMS/DMS/AMI/DA is an asset. Hybrid work arrangement available; strong collaboration with internal/external stakeholders and ability to drive solutions in a changing energy landscape.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
- Registration with APEGA as a Professional Engineer
- 5+ years of experience in the planning of electric distribution systems
- Broad knowledge and understanding of electric power systems
- Understanding of regulatory concepts as related to distribution system planning
- Excellent analytical skills and ability to resolve complex technical issues
- Demonstrated ability to apply distribution system planning concepts
- Excellent knowledge of CYMDIST and other simulation software for load flow, power quality and short circuit analysis
- Exposure to Python, Azure, DataBricks, Snowflake or similar data warehousing tools is considered an asset
- Exposure to Microsoft Power BI or equivalent tools for building reports
- Conversant in the use of Microstation CAD and GeoEngineering
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access) and Visual Basic Applications
- Familiarity with SCADA, Outage Management Systems (OMS), Distribution Management System (DMS), Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Distribution Automation (DA)
- Proficient in the use of personal computers, automated tools, and online conferencing applications
