Job Summary
Conduct BLS pre-hospital patient care during emergency medical service incidents, determining the nature and extent of medical problems while following established treatment protocols and transporting patients to appropriate facilities. Perform manual and technical duties to mitigate emergency incidents, including fire suppression, hazardous material activities, and safety officer responsibilities as directed by the Incident Commander. Inspect and maintain ambulances, vehicles, and medical equipment, ensuring supplies and medications remain at desired levels while completing accurate documentation for transport and equipment usage. Complete station chores such as cleaning and laundry, and participate in public relations, educational, and recruitment programs. Maintain current Virginia EMT-Basic certification, Firefighter 1 certification (or enrollment within one year), and required IS-700/IS-100/IS-200 training while working cooperatively with Volunteer Rescue Squad members to streamline operations and decrease turnaround times.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED
- Current Virginia Emergency Medical Technician – Basic certification
- Certification as Firefighter 1 or must be enrolled in a Firefighter 1 course within one year of employment
- Current certification in EVOC, and CPR
- Current National Incident Management System IS-700 and IS-100
- Requires completion of National Incident Management System IS-200 within 120 days of employment
- Successfully complete a pre-employment physical, illicit drug screening and criminal background check
- Valid Virginia Drivers' License and be insurable under the County's policy
- Desire to serve and assist others in a professional manner
- Requires the ability to maintain effective working relationships in order to explain policies and obtain cooperation in stressful situations
- Requires the ability to seamlessly integrate with Volunteer Rescue Squad members
- Ability to carry out oral and written instructions
- Good decision making skills
- Dependability as measured by attendance and punctuality
- Ability to work closely and harmoniously with others, especially the volunteers of Campbell County
Desired Qualifications
- Preferred one year of active emergency medical services experience at the level of EMT-Basic
- Desirable: Previous experience in combination, career and volunteer public safety setting
- Certification in Vehicle Extrication
- Current enrollment in ALS Courses
- Certification as Firefighter II
