Job Summary
Respond to dispatched calls by driving the ambulance to emergency sites while observing traffic ordinances and assessing scene safety. Evaluate patients' injuries or illnesses, extricate them from entrapment, and provide care using Basic Life Support, CPR, and AED. Monitor vital signs, determine transport priority, and communicate with dispatchers or medical control physicians as needed. Transport patients to medical facilities, report observations in writing, and assist with loading and unloading. Maintain ambulance readiness by checking fluids, fuel, and equipment; ensure cleanliness, organize supplies, and properly dispose of medical waste. Comply with regulations for deceased patients and handle evidence protection.
Required Qualifications
- HS Diploma or GED Equivalent
- NY EMT-B or EMT-CC active certification
- BLS Certification from the American Heart Association
- NIMS ICS-100 and IS-700 coursework
- Must be able to safely lift, carry, and balance up to 150 pounds without assistance and up to 300 pounds with assistance
- Must demonstrate competency in assessment of a patient, handling emergencies using Basic Life Support equipment and techniques
- Must be able to perform CPR
- Must be able to control bleeding
- Must be able to provide non-invasive treatment of hypoperfusion
- Must be able to stabilize/immobilize injured bones and the spine
- Must be able to manage environmental emergencies
- Must be able to manage emergency childbirth
- Must be able to use an automatic external defibrillator (AED)
- Must be able to assist patients with self-administration or administer emergency medications as described in state or local protocol
