Job Summary
Emergency Veterinary Assistant position at VEG in Albuquerque, NM. You’ll be the first warm welcome, triage incoming patients, assist with treatments, nursing care, diagnostics (bloodwork, imaging, catheter placement, oxygen support), monitor anesthesia and sedation with veterinarians and technicians, manage IV fluids and medications, participate in patient rounds, and support care from exam room to treatment area. The role includes growth pathways toward advanced responsibilities (e.g., anesthesia support, ultrasound, catheterization) through guided training; CPR and RECOVER Certification training are provided. The role emphasizes empathetic, ownership-minded collaboration in a fast-paced emergency veterinary team with rotating night/weekend/holiday shifts and opportunities for ongoing learning, mentorship, and career development.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Enrolled in AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program a plus
- 1+ years in a veterinary assistant role (emergency or specialty experience is a bonus)
- Basic computer skills and understanding of practice management software and EMR
- Excellent communication with pet parents and team
- Fine motor skills for handling patients and equipment
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, lift up to 25 kg alone and up to 40 kg with assistance
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong odors
- Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays on rotating or as-needed basis
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with diverse colleagues
