Emergency Medical Technician I

Job Summary

Provide basic emergency medical care and transportation in accordance with state laws, departmental policies, and clinical protocols under the direction of a Paramedic or clinical leader. Assist with patient assessment, vital sign monitoring, and delivery of care while administering first aid treatments such as CPR, bandaging wounds, and immobilizing fractures. Operate emergency vehicles safely, conduct vehicle and equipment checks at the start of each shift, and maintain and restock necessary supplies. Complete accurate documentation in the electronic medical record and collaborate with paramedics, nurses, and physicians for continuity of care upon patient transfer. Demonstrate proper use of personal protective equipment and follow infection control procedures while escalating concerns through the proper chain of command.

Required Qualifications

  • Technical School completion of a state-approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training program
  • Drivers License - MDOT Medical Physical in state of employment
  • EMT - Emergency Medical Tech Certification from the applicable state EMS authority
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support
  • Indiana: IDHS EMT Certification

Desired Qualifications

  • Technical School EMT Advanced course
  • Experience working in a hospital-based emergency department, ambulance service, or critical care transport unit
  • Knowledge of EMS protocols, emergency response procedures, and basic life support techniques
  • Ability to safely operate emergency vehicles and perform routine vehicle and equipment checks
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with patients, families, and clinical teams
  • Familiarity with documentation standards in electronic medical record (EMR) systems
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in dynamic and fast-paced environments
  • Commitment to patient safety, infection control, and use of PPE
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and respond quickly to changing clinical situations
