Job Summary
Embedded Software Engineer at HavocAI leads hardware/software development of embedded systems for fleets of uncrewed surface vessels (USVs). Responsibilities include leading low-level software control on STM32 platforms using C/C++ with RTOS (e.g., ChibiOS, FreeRTOS), designing and optimizing drivers for CAN (J1939, NMEA2000, DroneCAN) and RS485 (ModBus), integrating and testing subsystems (motors, batteries, actuators, sensors) with vendors, collaborating with hardware/autonomy teams to abstract hardware functions, setting up HIL test environments, and creating software documentation and design notes. Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar, proven embedded software development experience on STM32 with RTOS, knowledge of CAN and RS485, experience with git/docker/Confluence/Jira, strong electronics skills (soldering, prototyping, debugging), ability to manage prototype projects, US Citizenship and eligibility for a Secret Clearance. Location requirement specifies the greater Boston area with onsite as needed, and the role emphasizes defense/mission-focused applications and distributed autonomy solutions.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience contributing to or extending PX4 or ArduPilot open-source autopilot codebases.
- Background in automotive or marine systems with distributed, bus-based architectures.
- Familiarity with implementing pub/sub architectures (e.g., DDS) on resource-constrained systems.
- Familiarity with basic mechanical assembly and use of standard shop tools.
- Experience with environmental or mission-critical applications of robotics.
- Must be based in the greater Boston area, with the ability to work onsite as needed.
