Job Summary
Feed and water elephants and other assigned species, clean and sanitize animal quarters, and prepare daily diets. Maintain records of activities, observe behavior for signs of illness, and assist veterinarians with minor operations and medication administration. Implement approved training and enrichment projects while participating in research initiatives. Respond to public inquiries and deliver keeper talks to visitors and media as required. This full-time role requires a valid driver's license, one year of zoo experience preferred, and the ability to work irregular hours including weekends and holidays. The position involves physical demands such as lifting up to 75 pounds and exposure to inclement weather and animal odors.
Required Qualifications
- 18 years of age or older
- One year of zoo keeping experience
- Valid driver license with acceptable motor vehicle record
- Proof of negative tuberculosis (TB) screening within previous six months prior to placement and annually thereafter
- Ability to work independently in the absence of immediate supervision
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities
- Ability to work irregular hours (holidays and weekends)
- Ability to work special events and functions as required
- Ability to work around animals susceptible to specific diseases
- Ability to use personal protective equipment such as gloves, face masks
Desired Qualifications
- Elephant zoo keeping experience
- Bachelor's degree in wildlife management, zoology, animal behavior, biology, ecology, psychology or related field
- Specialized training in zoology or a related field
