Job Summary
Guidance Counselor for elementary students focused on helping them overcome learning obstacles and adjust to school life. Responsibilities include interpreting the school's objectives to students, parents, and the community; working with faculty to aid at-risk students; conducting individual and small-group counseling addressing personal, home, family, health, and emotional issues; conferring with parents; participating in faculty committees and student activities; maintaining professional competence and confidentiality; acting as a liaison with outside agencies; arranging tutors and summer school; supporting classroom activities; and serving as Drug Free Schools Coordinator. Requires strong communication, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to relate positively to students, staff, parents and the public, and ability to monitor and develop student outcomes. Familiarity with play therapy and related methods is a plus; travel may be required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Science, Ed. D., or Ph. D., degree in an appropriate teaching area
- Valid State of Iowa Teacher Certification with proper endorsement or ability to obtain temporary certification
- POSITION PURPOSE: Help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in adjusting to school life regardless of sex, culture or ethnic background.
