Job Summary
Shape and direct students' activities to engage meaningfully in art instruction covering crafts, drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, printmaking, and computer graphics. Teach art content including history, aesthetics, criticism, and visual culture while providing differentiated instruction for diverse populations. Model techniques in drawing and painting, organize storage areas for materials and equipment, and establish routines to ensure a safe learning environment. Monitor safe practices regarding potentially hazardous art materials and supervise in- and out-of-class activities. Plan and prepare artwork for school and community displays, communicate program goals to parents and administrators, and manage the supply budget with required financial records.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in art education
- Eligible for or in possession of the appropriate teaching license from the Virginia Department of Education
- Tuberculin skin test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis
- Must meet all pre-employment screenings
- Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of the subject(s) to be taught
- Demonstrates knowledge of the art content, skills, and processes
- Demonstrates considerable knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching
- Demonstrates considerable knowledge of developmental theories in relation to art and cognition
- Demonstrates knowledge of current assessment strategies
- Has the ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports
- Effectively interacts with pupils, colleagues, administrators, and classified employees
- Knowledgeable in the use of personal computers
