Elementary AEP Instructional Assistant

Job Summary
Supervise students assigned to Alternative Educational Placement (AEP) for disciplinary reasons while providing behavioral and academic support. Maintain a highly structured and orderly environment under the general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of a certified teacher. Intervene physically using approved Handle with Care techniques when necessary to prevent student injury, manage behavior, and administer discipline according to board policies and Individual Education Plans. Provide ongoing academic and behavioral support, distribute and check assignments, assist in maintaining student files, and supervise students during lunch and bathroom breaks. Facilitate relationships between co-workers, supervisors, students, and parents while ensuring compliance with all local policies, state statutes, and federal regulations.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma & meet the District's formal academic assessment required by Every Student Succeeds Act
- Associates (or higher) degree OR 48 college credit hours
- Valid Texas Educational Aide Certificate
- Meet the rigorous standard of quality required by the district
- Work with students who have difficulty with academics, behavior, and social skills
- Follow written and/or oral directions and to exercise good judgment
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with students, parents and school personnel
- Certified in Handle with Care (training provided by District)
- Maintain professional demeanor under stress
- Regular attendance is an essential function
- Full range of motion- walking, mild running including student restraint
- Lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds including student restraint
- Ability to respond to tasks and/or behaviors quickly; acute or corrected vision and hearing
Desired Qualifications
- Two years' experience working with students and parents- preferred. This experience may be work in church-related school, day camps, youth groups, and private schools, licensed day-care centers or similar experiences.
