Job Summary

Electronics - Technical Specialist II at NRAO. Performs design, fabrication, calibration, testing, analysis, troubleshooting, and repair of astronomy-related equipment (computers, electronics, electrical systems, cryogenics, lasers). Reports to engineers; discusses design details, creates sketches, builds prototype/production units, sets up test apparatus, conducts functional/environmental/life tests, analyzes data, sources parts, writes technical reports, and communicates findings. May assist in installation, may train and lead technicians, and ensures safety compliance. Requires advanced practical knowledge across mechanics, electrical/electronic technology, physics, and related fields, with five years of related experience and an Associate degree or equivalent combination. On-site at Green Bank Observatory, WV; frequent interaction with engineers and technical staff; proficiency with MS Project, JIRA, CMMS, ERP systems is preferred. Must be able to stand, operate a computer, and work near moving mechanical parts; position requires eligibility to work in the United States and cannot sponsor H-1B visas.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Five years of related experience (mechanics, electrical/electronic technology, physics, welding, machining or related field)
  • Must possess a working knowledge of mechanics, electrical/electronic technology, physics, or related fields
  • Must pass applicable knowledge/skills tests
  • Leadership qualities and ability to train/lead technicians
  • Strong communication skills; ability to write technical reports and documentation
  • Experience with test equipment design, analysis of test data, and evaluating system performance
  • Experience with ERP systems, MS Project, JIRA, CMMS (preferred)
  • Ability to work in a mission-driven, team-oriented environment
  • Ability to work in lab/shop/climate-controlled environments and at heights or outdoors
