Job Summary
Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain scientific laboratory equipment across campus, specializing in biosafety cabinets, vacuum pumps, centrifuges, and analytical instruments. Respond to work orders, document parts usage, and ensure compliance with safety protocols for teaching and research settings. Mentor student employees and faculty on equipment operation, while designing custom circuitry and interfacing systems using tools like LabVIEW. Manage purchasing and expense reporting for equipment needs, and lead campus-wide training on safety and instrument use. Support the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department and College of Life Sciences to maintain research continuity and student development.
Required Qualifications
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
- Associate's degree in Electronic/Electrical Technologies, Engineering, or Computer Science with a hardware emphasis
- 5 years of experience repairing electronic instruments
- 10 years of hands-on experience in the electronic instrumentation service field
- Strong troubleshooting skills
- Basic computer proficiency
- Must hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend
- Knowledge of NEC and industrial safety codes
- Familiarity with lab instruments: spectrophotometers, gas/liquid chromatography, mass specs, microscopes
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering or a related field
- 5+ years of experience repairing scientific lab instruments and interfacing with computer systems
- Experience in chemistry and life science instrumentation
- Skilled in using electronic test tools: VOMs, oscilloscopes, power supplies
