Electrical Plans Examiner and/or Inspector

Job Summary

Inspect new or major electrical wiring modifications and related apparatus throughout the City, checking projects for defects and departures from correct procedure. Review blueprints for permits, discuss necessary changes with contractors, and conduct inspections to ensure work follows approved plans. Investigate complaints of defective installations reporting fire hazards, issue correction instructions, and perform re-inspections. Represent the City at court hearings and report violations. Consult with owners and engineers to explain electrical standards and interpret code requirements for air conditioning electrical loads.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • considerable experience in one or more of the building construction trades
  • Minimum five years construction experience in a supervisory capacity
  • equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of the Florida Building Code
  • Knowledge of all other applicable codes, standards and regulations pertaining to building construction and related activities
  • Ability to detect and locate defective workmanship and material
  • Ability to ascertain the state of construction when defects are most easily found and remedied
  • Ability to make decisions recognizing established precedents and practices
  • Ability to use resourcefulness and tact in meeting new problems
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates and other employees, building owners, contractors, architects, engineers and the general public
  • Ability to understand and work from plans, drawings and diagrams
  • Ability to prepare complete and accurate records
  • Certified Electrical Inspector and/or Plans Examiner by the State of Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation
  • At least five years of field experience as a Certified Journeyman Electrician or Master Electrician issued by the Miami-Dade or Broward County Construction Trades Qualifying Board
  • At least five years of field experience as a state certified Electrical Contractor issued by the Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board
  • A current license issued by the State of Florida as an Engineer
  • Must be certified or certifiable by the Miami Dade and/or the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA)

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of design, engineering, materials and methods related to residential and commercial construction
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to understand and interpret codes and evaluate project proposals and projects under construction to verify conformance with code requirements
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to make appropriate, sometimes unpopular decisions
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a non-technical manner
  • Ability to respond diplomatically to angry citizens or clients
  • Ability to coordinate activities with other departments
  • Knowledge of computer software applications
