Job Summary
Interprets and transliterates between Deaf/Hard of Hearing students and English-speaking non-signers in classroom and school-related environments; provides supports to the learning environment such as directing attention and identifying environmental sounds; collaborates as part of an educational team, including participation in IEP meetings; ensures effective communication by adapting signing level to students' needs, and prepares instructional materials for substitute interpreters; requires ASL fluency, English proficiency, EIPA 4.0+, and knowledge of Deaf culture; maintains professional boundaries and adheres to district policies; employment contingent on a satisfactory criminal background check; work is in a professional school setting with a range of activities across campus and community engagements.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree
- Must acquire EIPA 4.0+ and pass knowledge Written Test within 3 years
- ASL and English fluency (spoken/written, academic English)
- Ability to comprehend, interpret, transliterate ASL to English and vice versa
- Knowledge of American Deaf culture and sensitivity
- Interpreting/transliterating in classroom and school settings
- Prepare for IEP meetings and participate as an educational team member
Desired Qualifications
- Have an Associate's degree (preferred advanced degrees in ASL Interpreting)
- EIPA 4.0+ or equivalent knowledge assessment within three years of hire
- Fluency in American Sign Language and English (spoken/written, including academic English)
- Experience interpreting/transliterating ASL to English and vice versa in school settings
- Knowledge of American Deaf culture and multicultural sensitivity
- Experience with IEP processes and collaborating with school teams
- RID certification pursuit or equivalent (preferred)
- Educational interpreter training program experience (preferred)
- Two years of paid interpreting work (preferred)
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment rating of 3.5 (preferred)
- Passing score on EIPA-WT (preferred)
