Required Qualifications

• •Associate degree
• •48 semester hours
• •Pass the WorkKeys assessment
• •Willing and eligible to obtain a bus driver's license
• •High School Diploma
• •Valid driver's license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles
• •Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification (if assigned with Emotionally Disabled students)
• •General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the teaching of the special education population
• •General knowledge of the activities performed by the lead teacher
• •General knowledge of the daily routines of the classroom
• •General knowledge of student handbook rules and regulations
• •General knowledge of procedures to follow in an emergency
• •General knowledge of the principles of organization and administration
• •General knowledge of the curriculum for the assigned grade
• •Ability to maintain files and information
• •Skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment
• •Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students
• •Ability to operate audio visual, standard office, word and data processing equipment
• •Ability to operate adaptive equipment
• •Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• •Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with teachers, peers, parents, students, and administrators
• •Ability to motivate students
• •Ability to maintain order and discipline in a classroom
• •Ability to lift, move, and operate adaptive equipment
• •Ability to assist students with personal care tasks
• •Ability to escort students as assigned
• •Ability to assist students with mobility needs such as lifting and positioning students, lifting in and out of wheelchairs, loading and unloading on/off the bus, transporting students in and around the school and on field trips
• •Ability to monitor students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments
• •Ability to provide programmed practice activities and repetitions
• •Ability to report student concerns directly and expeditiously to the teacher
• •Ability to assist with breakfast, lunch, snack, including clean-up
• •Ability to prepare letters for parents
• •Ability to collaborate with teacher to incorporate information provided by parents, doctors, nurses, therapists and counselors
• •Ability to coordinate with social workers, teachers, bus drivers, administrators, volunteers, and other assistants
• •Ability to perform general housekeeping duties
• •Ability to serve as job coach as assigned to students at community - based job placements
• •Ability to engage in CPI techniques
• •Ability to give approved medications
• •Ability to assist sick or hurt children
• •Ability to contact parents, if necessary, as directed by the teacher
• •Ability to monitor special diets as needed
• •Ability to make attempts to incorporate fine motor skills, sensory stimulation, self-help skills, social skills and computer skills into classroom activities
• •Ability to perform repair and maintenance tasks related to school and student equipment
• •Ability to charge wheelchairs
• •Ability to perform skilled nursing procedures
• •Ability to set up various equipment each morning
• •Ability to put equipment away at the end of the day
• •Ability to wash mats, toys, equipment, etc. with antibacterial soap/bleach
• •Ability to supervise morning activities
• •Ability to greet students
• •Ability to assist students with the placement of belongings
• •Ability to supervise Centers
• •Ability to participate in activities for children with special needs
• •Ability to assist students with independent projects
• •Ability to listen to students
• •Ability to read stories
• •Ability to constantly monitor the behavior of the students
• •Ability to employ strategies as necessary to protect students from injury
• •Ability to reward good behavior
• •Ability to respond to inappropriate behavior as instructed by the teacher
• •Ability to supervise play time and situations where the classroom teacher is out of the room
• •Ability to assist with the delivery of special services for intellectually and/or physically disabled students
• •Ability to assist with therapeutic rehabilitation
• •Ability to prepare students for therapy and other special classes
• •Ability to monitor the administration of medication
• •Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments
• •Ability to come into direct contact with RCSS staff, students and the public
• •Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force
• •Ability to perform significant walking, bending, standing, stooping
• •Ability to physically move students or equipment
• •Ability to position students in specialized equipment
• •Ability to change diapers as needed
• •Ability to perform feeding tube procedures

Desired Qualifications

• •Three (3) to five (5) years of experience working in an EC classroom/environment
• •Training in assisting students with special needs
• •Able to obtain a North Carolina Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with school bus certification and P&S endorsements
