Job Summary

Assist classroom teachers with instructional objectives, behavior modifications, and individualized academic support for students with disabilities. Provide personal care, mobility assistance, and supervision during small group activities, field trips, and independent projects. Monitor student safety and well-being while managing classroom routines, administering medications, and maintaining confidential records. Perform general housekeeping duties, including setting up equipment, cleaning materials, and operating adaptive devices. Coordinate with teachers, parents, therapists, and administrators to ensure appropriate services for students with special needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree
  • 48 semester hours
  • Pass the WorkKeys assessment
  • Willing and eligible to obtain a bus driver's license
  • High School Diploma
  • Valid driver's license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification (if assigned with Emotionally Disabled students)
  • General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the teaching of the special education population
  • General knowledge of the activities performed by the lead teacher
  • General knowledge of the daily routines of the classroom
  • General knowledge of student handbook rules and regulations
  • General knowledge of procedures to follow in an emergency
  • General knowledge of the principles of organization and administration
  • General knowledge of the curriculum for the assigned grade
  • Ability to maintain files and information
  • Skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment
  • Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students
  • Ability to operate audio visual, standard office, word and data processing equipment
  • Ability to operate adaptive equipment
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with teachers, peers, parents, students, and administrators
  • Ability to motivate students
  • Ability to maintain order and discipline in a classroom
  • Ability to lift, move, and operate adaptive equipment
  • Ability to assist students with personal care tasks
  • Ability to escort students as assigned
  • Ability to assist students with mobility needs such as lifting and positioning students, lifting in and out of wheelchairs, loading and unloading on/off the bus, transporting students in and around the school and on field trips
  • Ability to monitor students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments
  • Ability to provide programmed practice activities and repetitions
  • Ability to report student concerns directly and expeditiously to the teacher
  • Ability to assist with breakfast, lunch, snack, including clean-up
  • Ability to prepare letters for parents
  • Ability to collaborate with teacher to incorporate information provided by parents, doctors, nurses, therapists and counselors
  • Ability to coordinate with social workers, teachers, bus drivers, administrators, volunteers, and other assistants
  • Ability to perform general housekeeping duties
  • Ability to serve as job coach as assigned to students at community - based job placements
  • Ability to engage in CPI techniques
  • Ability to give approved medications
  • Ability to assist sick or hurt children
  • Ability to contact parents, if necessary, as directed by the teacher
  • Ability to monitor special diets as needed
  • Ability to make attempts to incorporate fine motor skills, sensory stimulation, self-help skills, social skills and computer skills into classroom activities
  • Ability to perform repair and maintenance tasks related to school and student equipment
  • Ability to charge wheelchairs
  • Ability to perform skilled nursing procedures
  • Ability to set up various equipment each morning
  • Ability to put equipment away at the end of the day
  • Ability to wash mats, toys, equipment, etc. with antibacterial soap/bleach
  • Ability to supervise morning activities
  • Ability to greet students
  • Ability to assist students with the placement of belongings
  • Ability to supervise Centers
  • Ability to participate in activities for children with special needs
  • Ability to assist students with independent projects
  • Ability to listen to students
  • Ability to read stories
  • Ability to constantly monitor the behavior of the students
  • Ability to employ strategies as necessary to protect students from injury
  • Ability to reward good behavior
  • Ability to respond to inappropriate behavior as instructed by the teacher
  • Ability to supervise play time and situations where the classroom teacher is out of the room
  • Ability to assist with the delivery of special services for intellectually and/or physically disabled students
  • Ability to assist with therapeutic rehabilitation
  • Ability to prepare students for therapy and other special classes
  • Ability to monitor the administration of medication
  • Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments
  • Ability to come into direct contact with RCSS staff, students and the public
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force
  • Ability to perform significant walking, bending, standing, stooping
  • Ability to physically move students or equipment
  • Ability to position students in specialized equipment
  • Ability to change diapers as needed
  • Ability to perform feeding tube procedures

Desired Qualifications

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience working in an EC classroom/environment
  • Training in assisting students with special needs
  • Able to obtain a North Carolina Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with school bus certification and P&S endorsements
