Job Summary
DPW Highway Cleanup Assistant Manager will supervise highway cleanup teams in the Burning Man event context, ensuring safe, responsible roadside cleanup and adherence to Leave No Trace procedures. The role supports the Highway Cleanup Manager and Environmental Restoration Manager, interfaces with cooperating agencies, and ensures compliance with government stipulations. This is a short-term, non-benefits contract (approximately 10–12 days) based in Black Rock City, Nevada and surrounding areas, immediately following the event. Responsibilities include field supervision and representation, monitoring environmental impact concerns, ensuring safe driving practices and adherence to cleanup operating procedures, staff oversight and scheduling, coordinating with the DPW timeline, mentoring staff, addressing personnel matters, and assisting with recruitment and training. Additional duties cover asset management of safety gear and equipment, planning LNT and waste disposal plans, adapting workflows to safety protocols, and maintaining Burning Man staff policies and professional conduct. The role requires extreme-environment readiness, strong communication skills, leadership of a diverse team, and willingness to relocate temporarily to Gerlach, NV. License: Valid driver’s license and good driving record. Physical requirements include heavy lifting, outdoor exposure, and potential travel to meet with department representatives.
Required Qualifications
- Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.
- Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada
- Clear, service-oriented and professional communication, verbally and through written correspondence.
- Experienced with using 2 way radios and following radio protocol.
- Able to embody proactive, present and responsive leadership qualities for a diverse team while still maintaining firm boundaries and adhering to set standards.
- Experience managing staff/volunteers with a willingness to promote their strengths and respect their limitations.
- Ability to tactfully manage, reassign and redirect workflow using education, empowerment, and delegation when appropriate or necessary.
- Able to receive and integrate feedback into action, remain calm and focused under pressure and emergency situations, and maintain a professional demeanor that leads by example.
