Job Summary

DOT Safety Specialist is a subject matter expert for all DOT-regulated fleet operations and FMCSA compliance programs. Responsible for regulatory compliance, supporting operational excellence, protecting the company’s safety rating, reducing risk, and promoting a proactive safety culture among commercial drivers, field leadership, and operations teams. Key duties include establishing and auditing Driver Qualification files (49 CFR Part 391), verifying CDL validity and medical certifications, monitoring CDL expiration, coordinating driver medical examinations, ensuring annual driver file reviews, managing FMCSA Clearinghouse queries, tracking Hours of Service (HOS) compliance and ELD data, investigating HOS violations, coaching drivers on HOS regulations, assisting with accident investigations and root-cause analysis, maintaining accident records and trend data, analyzing CSA scores and SMS data, preparing safety performance reports, managing drug and alcohol testing (49 CFR Part 40 and Part 382), staying current with regulations, supporting internal audits, and generating safety metrics for management.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Transportation, or related field preferred
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in DOT/FMCSA compliance and/or fleet safety management
  • Proven track record of managing driver qualification files and Hours of Service (HOS) compliance
  • Experience with CSA score management and improvement initiatives
  • Proficiency with Electronic Logging Devices (ELD) and fleet management software
  • Experience with FMCSA portals (Clearinghouse, DataQs, SMS, etc.)
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record
  • Previous experience in the construction industry or similar heavy equipment environment
  • Experience with transportation management systems (TMS) and fleet tracking software
  • Familiarity with post-accident drug and alcohol testing procedures
