Job Summary
Petco Certified Dog Trainer responsible for delivering one-on-one sessions and group classes, developing customized training plans, and advising pet parents on training, nutrition, and wellness solutions. Roles include actively engaging guests with 360-degree solutions, promoting appropriate classes and supplies, maintaining accurate training records, collaborating with grooming and veterinary teams to provide holistic health support, and progressing through Petco’s DTIP certification pathway to become a certified trainer. Strong communication, customer service, and organizational skills, plus the ability to manage multiple tasks, work flexible hours including weekends/evenings/holidays, and safely handle dogs of all sizes, are required.
Required Qualifications
- Passion for animal care, training, and welfare and a genuine interest for improving the lives of pets and their pet parents
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with pet parents and provide clear instructions, demonstrations and applicable selling techniques
- Demonstrated ability to handle and work with dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds in a safe and humane manner
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize responsibilities effectively
- Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed to accommodate the training schedule and store operations
- Physical stamina to stand, walk, bend, and lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) associated with dog training equipment and supplies
- Familiarity with computer systems and software to manage training records, schedules, and communication with pet parents
- Dog Training Instructor Program (DTIP) requirements to become Petco Certified Dog Trainer
- Ability to complete the 6-week DTIP and subsequent stages to run and grow the dog training business within Petco locations
- Understanding of health and wellness concepts for dogs and ability to relay information to pet parents
- Bachelor or equivalent certifications not required; formal degree not specified
- Knowledge of safety protocols and humane handling of dogs
- Experience in a retail or guest-facing environment is a plus
- Proficiency with online booking/scheduling systems and CRM tools
